Top 5 Activities to Do with Your Dog in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is one of the best places to live if you're a dog owner, and as a lifelong local, I’ve spent plenty of time exploring the area with my dog, Louie June. Whether you're new to town or a long-time resident, there’s no shortage of dog-friendly spots that make for a great day out. From beaches to parks, these are my top five favorite places to take Louie for some fun and relaxation around Santa Cruz.

1. Brunch at Harbor Cafe – A Pup-Friendly Start to Your Weekend
Weekends in Santa Cruz are made for relaxing, and what better way to start than with a delicious brunch at Harbor Cafe? Located in the scenic Santa Cruz Harbor, the outdoor patio is perfect for pups who love to join in on the weekend fun. Louie June and I love sitting under the sunny umbrellas, people-watching, and enjoying their famous huevos rancheros. The laid-back atmosphere is ideal for a leisurely brunch, and the best part? Your dog can join you for the meal!

Pro Tip: Make sure to grab a water bowl for your dog at the cafe – the staff is always happy to serve up some extra love for your furry friend.

2. It's Beach – Off-Leash Freedom at Its Best
When it comes to dog-friendly beaches, It’s Beach is the top of our list. Located at the western end of the Santa Cruz Wharf, this is one of the few off-leash beaches in the area. Louie June loves the freedom to run and splash in the surf without a leash, and it's a great place to meet other dogs too! Whether your pup loves to play fetch in the waves or just enjoy a long walk along the shore, It's Beach offers plenty of space for everyone.

Pro Tip: It can get windy at the beach, so bring a jacket for yourself – but don't worry, Louie will love every minute of it!

3. Pacheco Dog Park – The Ultimate Fetch Spot
If you're looking for a dog park where your pup can play off-leash and meet other dogs, Pacheco Dog Park is the place to go. Situated in a quiet part of Santa Cruz, this park has wide open spaces, plenty of room for running, and lots of friendly pups to play with. Louie June and I love spending afternoons here, with me throwing the ball and Louie zooming after it. The park is well-maintained, and there are even some shaded spots to relax after the action-packed playtime.

Pro Tip: Pacheco is a popular spot, so if you prefer a quieter experience, try visiting in the early morning or late afternoon.

4. Hiking with Louie in Pogonip – A Nature Lover's Dream
For those who enjoy a good hike, Pogonip is one of the most beautiful spots in Santa Cruz. Located just above the city, this park offers miles of trails through lush forests and scenic views. Louie June and I love exploring the trails together, and it’s the perfect place to connect with nature while getting some exercise. The trails are dog-friendly, but keep your pup on a leash (especially in the more rugged areas) to ensure her safety.

Pro Tip: Bring a small backpack with water for both you and your dog – it can get warm in the summer months, and it's important to stay hydrated!

5. A Trip to Ben Lomond – Stock Up on Dog Essentials at Mountain Feed
Sometimes, a scenic drive is all you need to make your dog’s day. Louie June and I love heading up to Ben Lomond to visit Mountain Feed & Farm Supply, a fantastic local store where you can stock up on everything your dog needs – from high-quality food to unique toys. The drive itself is beautiful, with views of the redwoods and rolling hills, and once you arrive, you’ll find an amazing selection of pet products and friendly folks who truly care about your dog's well-being.

Pro Tip: Check out their selection of natural dog treats – Louie loves a good snack after our trip!
